Tapisserie Hercule filant aux pieds d’Omphale, château de Chambord

Fig.1 Hercules spinning at the feet of Omphale, Château de Chambord

Our unpublished Study for a figure of Hercules spinning relates to the tapestry of Hercules and Omphale, one of the nine pieces of the hanging known as the Amours des dieux executed after Simon Vouet.

Listed by Maurice Fenaille in his État général des tapisseries de la manufacture des Gobelins published in 1923 (no. 7 p.338, reproduced on p.341), it depicts Hercules, seated, spinning Omphale’s spinning wheel. Omphale is leaning on his shoulder, and on the right two little lovers are playing with the hero’s club, while a third is shooting an arrow at him.

Simon Vouet had already dealt with the theme of the love between Hercules and Omphale in an unlocated painting known from an engraving by Michel Dorigny published in 1643.
